Surveying of sites
A survey is normally initiated by an enquiry from a client or contractor. The initial survey identifies and quantifies the problem in the following manner; a sample of Asbestos is carefully removed from the site and sent to a laboratory for analysis, once the findings come back from the laboratory and the exact type of Asbestos has been identified an informed decision can then be made as to how to safely deal with the problem.
From this survey the legal obligations of the owner are highlighted. Basically, if you are in control of the premises then it is your duty to manage any Asbestos found within those premises.
The techniques of safe removal and disposal are discussed and a decision made as to the best way to solve and address the problem.
Producing registers
Asbestos registers are site registers that detail the condition, location and history of all Asbestos materials within a particular site. These are on-going documents and may include photographs and drawings.
Encapsulation
As part of an Asbestos Management Strategy total removal of the hazardous substance may not always be the best solution. An alternative to removal is encapsulation. This method involves treating Asbestos with a coating that surrounds or embeds fibres in an adhesive matrix to prevent the release of fibres.
Removal and disposal
The first step is to contain the area and render the site safe. An airtight enclosure is constructed around the contaminated or working area to protect the outside environment. To prevent leakage of dust outside the enclosure the area is put under negative air pressure. An independent analytical laboratory, normally of the client's choice, regularly monitors the removal works.
- All removal operatives wear protective clothing and respiratory masks and undergo thorough training on a regular basis
- The waste from the site is removed in special containers and disposed of at licensed landfill sites
- The equipment used is the latest available and is maintained and tested bi-annually in a controlled environment
- We are licensed and overseen by the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency
